Walking East At Indian Run Reservoir by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

One of the greatest questions that I receive is how someone who has spent so much time on the water also is an avid hiker. The answer I usually give is that it is surprising that I have spent so much time on the water.

My time hiking is somewhat natural. My grandfather was a Swiss immigrant. They are almost born hiking where he came from (I still have his hiking staff). It is somewhat natural for me to appreciate a long walk (or a short one when a long walk cannot be had). My proclivity for this activity may not be cultural or genetic in its makeup, but it might as well be.

In winter, there is more to enjoy while hiking. The snow muffles extraneous sounds and there is a quiet, peacefulness, that surrounds. The quiet makes for a wonderful time of thought or talking with a hiking companion.

On this walk at Indian Run Reservoir, I had a welcome interruption by someone walking three Black Labs. One of the pups reached and jumped up on me as the owner apologized. My response was to scratch the smile canine's ear and to say that it was okay. Because the dogs count as companions to talk to as well, and their high spirits are encouraging. On further eastward, a stream crossing awaits and we need to be careful on the snow-covered bridge.
